Discover Porthtowan – A Hidden Gem on Cornwall’s North Coast

Tucked between rugged cliffs and rolling waves, Porthtowan is a charming coastal village with a laid-back surf vibe and breathtaking natural beauty. A favourite with locals and visitors alike, this small but vibrant village offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and Cornish character.

At the heart of Porthtowan is its Blue Flag beach – a wide stretch of soft golden sand backed by dunes and cliffs, ideal for sunbathing, beach games, and sandcastle building. It’s also one of Cornwall’s top surf spots, with consistent waves perfect for all levels. Surf lessons and board hire are available right on the beachfront, making it easy to dive into the action.

At low tide, the beach reveals fascinating rock pools and a hidden treasure – the Porthtowan tidal pool, carved into the rocks at the far end of the beach. It’s a magical place for a quiet swim or simply soaking up the views.

The village itself has everything you need within walking distance:

  • A friendly local shop for essentials

  • A delicious fish & chip takeaway

  • Two fantastic pubs – one with dramatic clifftop views and the other right beside the sand

  • A beachfront café and bar, perfect for sunset drinks

  • A surf shop and hire centre

  • An ice cream parlour for post-beach treats

  • A local beautician offering relaxing treatments

Walking and nature lovers will enjoy direct access to the South West Coast Path, with stunning cliff-top walks in both directions. Head west to discover the dramatic mining heritage of St Agnes Head, or east towards Chapel Porth and beyond, where the coastline is dotted with hidden coves and historic engine houses.

Porthtowan is also ideally located for exploring more of Cornwall’s highlights. In under 30 minutes, you can reach:

  • St Agnes, a quaint village with artisan shops and independent cafés

  • The lively seaside town of Perranporth, known for its long beach and beach bar

  • The city of Truro, with its cathedral, theatre, shops, and restaurants

  • Falmouth, with maritime heritage, galleries, and ferry trips

  • Iconic attractions like The Eden Project, St Ives, and Newquay are all within reach for day trips

Whether you're here for surf and sea, walking and wildlife, or just to relax with the sound of the waves, Porthtowan offers the perfect base for an authentic and memorable Cornish escape.

Getting Here

From the M5, take exit 30 to join the A30. Continue on the A30 for about 100 miles, passing Carland Cross (there will be windmills to your right), until you reach Chiverton Cross. Exit here.  Take the 5th exit off the roundabout, sign posted St Agnes. Continue on the road for a mile or so until you come to a crossroads, where you turn left, signposted Porthtowan. At the end of this road go straight across, again following signs to Porthtowan. Stay on this road until you see the sea on your right, head down the hill and turn right at the bottom into Beach Road. Head straight through the village until you come to the car park on your right. Once in the car park head left towards The Beach Shop sign. This is the end of the apartments. You will see a gap in the wall....this is the rear access to the apartments. Once inside you will find a parking permit. Unload your car, then take it out of the car park turning left and immediate left again. You will see houses on the left, and our car park is immediately behind them. The spaces are numbered. You park in 20, ensuring the permit is clearly displayed.

What Guests Say About Sunsets in Porthtowan

Guests love the stunning views, peaceful atmosphere, and unbeatable location of Sunsets – with many describing it as the perfect place to unwind by the sea. From morning coffee on the balcony to watching the sky light up at dusk, it's a stay that leaves a lasting impression.

If you’ve stayed with us, we’d love to hear about your experience! Your feedback helps us grow and gives future guests a glimpse of what makes Sunsets so special.

Absolutely fantastic location as virtually on Porthtowan beach, with everything (convenience shop, cafe, bar, pub, fish & chips, and kids play park etc) all within a few hundred meters.
The open plan living space has floor to ceiling patio windows onto the large balcony with table and chairs, and directly overlooks the sea so plenty of people and surfer watching opportunities!
Always spotlessly clean, useful efficient heaters (one stay was off season) loads of hot water, comfy beds, and there is a parking permit for a space just a short walk away.
Looking to book for the third time in 2025, as are family members who love it as much as I do.

Cathie McColl,

What a wonderful hidden gem. Sunsets is a fabulous apartment, with a super balcony that overlooks the beach. Two spacious bedrooms, the mezzanine main bedroom is comfortable and very relaxing, especially with the velux window enabling you to sleep to the sound of the waves. The twin bedroom is a good size and as a party of four adults we had plenty of space. The kitchen is well equipped, although with three wonderful eating establishments within a stones throw, we didn’t do much cooking ourselves. The seating area is comfortable and on a dreary day we turned the sofa around and sat watching the enormous waves rolling in. Porthtowan itself is a beautiful setting. We spent a lot of time exploring the beach and bays and watching the surfers. There are also lovely costal walks in both directions. It was a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of a busy life and we will hopefully be back before too long. Sarah is a wonderful host and any queries are promptly responded too.

Lynn Manning,

Karen Lockhart ,

We love staying at Sunsets having been here numerous times over the years. The apartment is very well designed and maintained. It’s always spotless and welcoming. The location of the apartment is incredible with sea views from the lounge . There is a lovely balcony for four people where you can immerse yourself in the surroundings and feel even closer to the sea …. And the beautiful sunsets of course. You can explore on foot straight from the door so if you don’t want to be driving around you really do not have to. The local bar and pub have a great atmosphere and the ice cream and fish and chips are a must. We have often booked Sunsets at the same time friends or family have booked Whispering Waves to make it into an even bigger experience. We’ve visited in the summer and in October and both times of year offer something different. Because it’s not as well known as other parts of Cornwall, even in peak season it never feels overrun with people. The host Sarah is brilliant and always available to help with anything we may need. We will definitely be back again.

Tanya Speight,

This is our fourth consecutive year at Sunsets. 10/10. Couldn't fault it. Perfect in every way.
The village is not overcrowded and has an amazing beach and walking paths. There's an amazing ice cream parlour, a surf shop, two surf schools, two restraurants, Fish and Chip shop, a cafe and a village shop with reasonable prices.
The apartment is fully equipped and always clean and immaculate. You literally can't get an accomodation any closer to the beach. The sunset from the balcony is amazing.
The host is the best I've dealt with, goes above and beyond.
This trip is the highlight of our year. Can't wait to go back next year.

Faisal Khalaf,
