Explore Porthtowan & the North Cornwall Coast
Nestled on Cornwall’s rugged north coast the seaside village of Porthtowan offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and coastal charm. This small but vibrant community is surrounded by spectacular scenery, sandy beaches, and miles of cliff-top trails, making it ideal for beach lovers, surfers, walkers, and families looking for an authentic Cornish escape.
Porthtowan – Surf, Sand & Sunsets
Porthtowan is famed for its Blue Flag beach, a wide expanse of golden sand flanked by dramatic cliffs. It’s a haven for surfers, sunseekers, and families, with rock pools, a hidden tidal sea pool, and some of the best sunsets in Cornwall. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in summer and is ideal for swimming, bodyboarding, and beachcombing.
The village has everything you need for a relaxed stay:
A local grocery shop
Traditional fish & chips
A beach café and bar with sunset views
Two popular pubs, one perched on the cliff and the other beside the beach
A surf shop with board hire and lessons
An ice cream parlour
A local beautician for seaside pampering
The South West Coast Path runs right through the village, offering breathtaking walks over headlands and through ancient mining landscapes. From Porthtowan, you can walk west toward St Agnes Head or east to the secret coves near Chapel Porth.
Just a 10-minute drive up the coast, Portreath is a historic harbour village with a sheltered sandy beach, great for families and beginner surfers. Once a bustling port during Cornwall’s mining heyday, it’s now a peaceful spot to enjoy the sea, watch the waves crash over the harbour wall, or explore the small local shops and cafés.
Portreath also connects to the coast path, with stunning cliff-top walks and hidden coves in either direction. The surrounding countryside is rich in history, with old mine buildings and panoramic views that stretch out over the Atlantic.
Elm Farm – Cycling & Country Escapes
A short drive inland from both villages is Elm Farm, the starting point for the popular Mineral Tramways Coast to Coast Trail – a scenic, mostly traffic-free cycling route that runs from Portreath on the north coast to Devoran on the south. Elm Farm offers bike hire, a family-friendly café, and a chance to enjoy Cornwall’s mining heritage at a gentle pace through wooded valleys and open countryside.
Beyond the Village
Porthtowan is well-placed for exploring more of Cornwall’s treasures. Within 30 minutes, you can reach:
The artistic town of St Ives
Truro, Cornwall’s cathedral city
Perranporth and its expansive beach
The maritime charm of Falmouth
World-class attractions like The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Whether you're catching waves, cycling through history, walking windswept cliffs, or simply relaxing with a cream tea and a sea view, Porthtowan offers something for everyone on the spectacular North Cornwall coast.
From the M5, take exit 30 to join the A30. Continue on the A30 for about 100 miles, passing Carland Cross (there will be windmills to your right), until you reach Chiverton Cross. Exit here. Take the 5th exit off the roundabout, sign posted St Agnes. Continue on the road for a mile or so until you come to a crossroads, where you turn left, signposted Porthtowan. At the end of this road go straight across, again following signs to Porthtowan. Stay on this road until you see the sea on your right, head down the hill and turn right at the bottom into Beach Road. Head straight through the village until you come to the car park on your right. Once in the car park head left towards The Beach Shop sign. This is the end of the apartments. You will see a gap in the wall....this is the rear access to the apartments. Once inside you will find a parking permit. Unload your car, then take it out of the car park turning left and immediate left again. You will see houses on the left, and our car park is immediately behind them. The spaces are numbered. You park in 20, ensuring the permit is clearly displayed.
