🏠 Your Brilliant Base in Porthtowan

Before you lace up your walking boots, let’s talk about the starting line. Our three beachfront apartments: Whispering Waves, Surf 'n' Sands, and Sunsets in Porthtowan: are perched right on the edge of the sand.

There is something truly special about waking up, checking the tide from your balcony, and seeing the path wind up the cliffside just a few hundred yards away.

Porthtowan Beachfront Apartments - Cornwall Coastal Holidays

Why our apartments are the perfect starting point:

  • Direct Access: You are literally steps away from the beach and the coast path.
  • Stunning Views: Fuel up with breakfast while watching the surf before you head out.
  • Convenience: After a 4.7-mile circular walk, there’s nothing better than knowing your hot shower and a comfy sofa are right there waiting for you.

🚶‍♀️ Setting Off: Porthtowan to the Cliffs

The walk begins by heading up the South West Coast Path on the eastern side of Porthtowan beach. It’s a bit of a climb to start with, but the reward is almost instant. As you gain height, the view back over Porthtowan beach opens up beautifully. You’ll see the surfers catching waves, the children exploring the rock pools, and our apartments sitting proudly overlooking the shore.

The path here is rugged and dramatic, typical of the North Cornish coast. In the late summer, the cliffs are a riot of purple and yellow as the heather and gorse come into bloom. It’s a sensory delight: the smell of the coconut-scented gorse mixed with the salty spray from the waves crashing against the rocks below.

⚒️ A Step Back in Time: Cornish Mining Heritage

As you make your way towards Chapel Porth, you’ll notice that the landscape is dotted with the skeletons of Cornwall's industrial past. This stretch of coast was once a hive of activity for copper and tin mining.

One of the most striking sights is the Charlotte United Engine House. Seeing these stone structures perched so precariously on the cliff edge is a humbling reminder of the hard work that took place here centuries ago. The contrast between the dark, weathered stone and the bright turquoise of the Atlantic is a photographer’s dream.

Why walkers love this section:

  • The History: It feels like walking through an open-air museum.
  • The Wildlife: Keep an eye out for Peregrine Falcons or Choughs (the Cornish national bird) soaring above the cliffs.
  • The Scale: The sheer height of the cliffs makes you feel wonderfully small in the best possible way.

🍦 The Main Event: Chapel Porth Beach Café

After about 45 minutes to an hour of walking (depending on how many photos you stop to take!), the path descends into the deep valley of Chapel Porth. This tiny cove is owned by the National Trust and is famous for two things: its rugged beauty and the legendary "Croust" from the Chapel Porth Beach Café.

You cannot visit Chapel Porth without trying one of their signature ice creams. They are the stuff of local legend, and for good reason.

🦔 The Hedgehog

This is the one that put the café on the map. It starts with a generous scoop of proper Cornish vanilla ice cream. This is then topped with a mountain of thick, golden Cornish clotted cream. Finally, the whole thing is rolled in honey-toasted hazelnuts. It’s crunchy, creamy, and utterly indulgent. It’s called a Hedgehog because the nuts look like little spikes: though it’s much friendlier to eat!

🦊 The Fox

If hazelnuts aren’t your thing, you have to try The Fox. This version features the same delicious ice cream and clotted cream base but is topped with a fantastic toasted coconut topping and often a bit of crumbly flapjack. It’s a tropical, buttery twist on the classic that is just as satisfying after a coastal hike.

🌊 Low Tide Magic and the Mermaid Pool

If you’ve timed your walk with a low tide, the experience is even better. At low tide, the beach at Chapel Porth expands into a massive stretch of golden sand that connects back towards Porthtowan.

If the tide is right out, you can choose to walk back along the beach rather than the cliff path. This gives you a completely different perspective of the "Greenback" cliffs and the hidden caves. However, do check the tide times carefully before you go: the sea comes back in quickly here!

Before you get back to the apartments, don’t forget to look for the Mermaid Pool at Porthtowan. It’s a beautiful natural tidal pool tucked into the rocks. On a calm day, it’s the perfect spot for a post-walk wild swim to cool off.

📋 Tips for Your Walk

To make the most of your adventure, here are a few local tips:

  • Check the Tides: This is crucial if you want to walk back along the sand. Aim to be at Chapel Porth about an hour before low tide.
  • Footwear: The path can be uneven and loose in places, so a pair of sturdy trainers or walking boots is better than flip-flops.
  • Dogs: The cliff path is dog-friendly, but keep them on a lead as the drops are sheer. Note that Chapel Porth and Porthtowan have seasonal dog restrictions on the sand itself.
  • Timing: If you’re staying in Sunsets, try to time your return for the golden hour. The sunsets here are some of the best in Cornwall.

🌅 Ending the Day at Cornwall Coastal Holidays

After you’ve conquered the cliffs and polished off your Hedgehog ice cream, the walk back to Porthtowan is a breeze. As you descend the final hill, you’ll see our beachfront apartments waiting for you.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of kicking off your boots and heading straight to your private balcony with a cold drink. Whether you are staying in Whispering Waves, Surf 'n' Sands, or Sunsets, you’ll have the best seat in the house to watch the sun dip below the horizon.
